Light at the Base of Things

A ring of LED lights encircles the base of a classical column, shot from below in near darkness. The light pools at the bottom, blazing brightest where it meets the floor, then traces the circle upward in a constellation of individual points. The column rises into shadow above it, ancient and indifferent to the electricity at its feet.

This is a painting about the meeting of old and new, about the way we keep finding new ways to make halos. The architecture is centuries old. The light is contemporary. Together they make something that feels like a place of worship for a religion that hasn't been named yet.
